FAQs
Company
- Q: When was JBS United Founded?
- 1956
- Q: Why did you change your name from United Feeds to JBS United, Inc?
In 2005 — After being known as United Feeds, Inc. for nearly half a century, the Sheridan, Indiana-based company has renamed itself JBS United, Inc. Although best known for its animal nutrition products, the former United Feeds has quietly expanded its portfolio of products and services over the years across North America and Asia.
“We've grown into much more than a feed company,” says John Swisher, CEO and founder of JBS United. “With our dedication to providing research-based solutions to enhance animal nutrition and livestock production profitability, we wanted our name to more accurately reflect the scope of who we've become and where our company is headed in the future.”
- Q: What services does JBS United offer?
- JBS United provides a variety of services, from soybean meal & DDGs trading and merchandising to weaned and feeder pig placements and sales to environmental services. JBS United is dedicated to providing top quality services to meet your needs.
- Q: What species do you serve?
- Pigs, horses, dairy cows, and poultry including broilers, layers and turkeys.
Emerging Technologies
- Q: Why is phosphorus important for pigs?
Pigs need phosphorus primarily for bone and muscle development, but also to better utilize energy in their diet. Insufficient phosphorus intake results in reduced bone and muscle accretion, and can lead to loss of skeletal integrity.
However, pigs can't digest phosphorus from feed grains because they lack sufficient levels of phytase, the enzyme that release phosphorus from grain. In fact, only 20-30% of phosphorus in feed grains is available to meet pig's nutritional requirements. As a result, most phosphorus from feed grains is excreted as waste into the environment.
- Q: Why should I use OptiPhos®?
OptiPhos can solve the problem of increasing phosphorous costs by creating a total cost savings of over $5.50 per ton of feed consumed. A top performing phytase enzyme like OptiPhos, when used in varying concentrations for pigs in the 50-280 lbs range, can allow for a total replacement of all inorganic supplemental phosphorus. OptiPhos can accomplish all this while maintaining growth rates and bone mineralization, improving feed efficiency, and substantially reducing phosphorus excretions. The JBS United research and development team has created a research paper, “High Cost Phosphorous, What are the Options?” to illustrate the positive utilization of OptiPhos. For a summarized version of JBS United's research, see the overview article, “Surviving Phosphorous Costs.”
- Q: Why are Omega 3 fatty acids important?
- Omega-3 fatty acids have many different uses in the body. They are essential for the production of new cells and give flexibility to cell membranes, allowing for better absorption of minerals and nutrients.
- Q: What are animal probiotics?
- A Probiotic consists of live bacteria which are fed to animals to promote healthy gut function.
- Q: What are digestive enzymes?
- Digestive enzymes are proteins that accelerate a chemical reaction in the body that breaks down food in the digestive tract.
- Q: What is Biotechnology?
- Biotechnology is broadly defined as the use of biological processes of microbes, and of plants or animal cells for the benefit of humans.
Transit
- Q: How quickly can JBS United ship feed?
- Within 2 - 3 days.
- Q: What types of trucks are in the JBS truck fleet?
- JBS has a variety of trailers ranging from van trailers, combination auger trailers and hopper trailers. In addition, there are bag and bulk only trucks for delivery of feed products and ingredients.
- Q: What is a typical turn-around time from order to delivery?
- One to three days depending upon salesmen, customer, and plant.
- Q: Why is having a transit fleet important?
- We have direct and personal contact with our customer. We have control over the trucks and what they previously hauled which gives us greater confidence in QC of ingredients coming in and finished product being delivered. We have better control over the timing of our deliveries for both internal and external customers. It allows us to “advertise” JBS United while we go about our daily business.
